Orangutans are some of our closest relatives, we share approximately 97% of our DNA. The very world "Orangutan" means 'Person of the jungle' in the Indonesian l...anguage, yet it is estimated that 6 to 12 of these 'jungle people' are killed each day for palm oil.
These gentle creatures are either killed in the deforestation process when they wander into a palm oil plantation looking for food, or in the illegal pet trade after they've been captured and kept as pets in extremely poor conditions and provided with extremely poor nutrition.
This September, Damien has been invited to speak at the Great Apes Summit in Jackson Hole (WY). The aim is to emerge from the Summit with proposals and action plans to address the complex issues that are forcing the extinction of orang-utans and other great apes.
But for now, please take the time today, on World Orangutan Day, to learn a little more about these gentle people of the jungle, and how daily consumption habits are contributing their extinction from the planet.
