THE TRUTH BEGINS TO EMERGE IN COSTA RICA
At last the truth is beginning to emerge in Costa Rica.
For over a decade I have been accusing INCOPESCA of corruption and of being in league with the shark finners of Puntaernas....
It was pressure from the shark finners that brought charges against me in 2002 when I intercepted and shut down an illegal shark finning operation in Guatemalan waters at the request of the Guatemalan government. We were making a documentary called Sharkwater and it was all documented. No one was hurt and nothing was damaged but based on accusationS by eight SHARK POACHING fishermen without documentation I was originally charged with eight counts of attempted murder. This was tossed out by the court and a few days later I was charged with eight counts of assault. That also was tossed out by the court and I was given permission to leave Costa Rica. Ten years later in 2012 I was arrested in Germany on a Costa Rican warrant for unsafe navigation. Why The persistence? And who gets extradited for unsafe navigation when no one was hurt and property was not damaged?
Events this week can certainly help explain it. Luis Dobles, Executive President of INCOPESCA, the agency that enforces fishery regulations (or more accurately the agency that fails to enforce fishery regulations) is now under investigation by Public Safety officials for corruption and accepting bribes from shark finners.
I am not surprised. However I do not expect the charges to be dropped against me. The corruption goes all the way to the top to the office of the President. Hopefully the pieces will begin to fall into place and more will be revealed about how Costa Rica has one of the worst records of marine conservation in all of Latin America.
