Lakewood Estates residents have joined the Friends of Boyd Hill Nature Preserve in opposing a proposed major construction project adjacent to the preserve. The St. Petersburg Country Club, a private corporation, is requesting that the City of St. Petersburg transfer public lands which would then be used for their own financial gain. This is clearly wrong on so many levels.

Please start paying attention to this local conservation issue. The ecological integrity of the preserve is at stake. Hardening of the urban interface is the greatest concern to me. The currently existing buffer zone between the preserve and golf course would be eliminated and replaced by a wall of development that is 3,200 linear feet in length. Habitat management challenges, particularly the need for increased use of prescribed fire, will be made even more difficult that it already is at this time. There is also a concern regarding the threat of a new roadway to imperiled and other wildlife. The proposed project site is near the area with the highest density of wildlife mortality during a roadkill survey conducted from 1992-1994.
